Did you miss the 2017 CPCA AGM? Here’s what you missed!

This year’s AGM gave members a taste of the “best of the west”. We started out with a BBQ at Tundra for their annual Shootin’ Down Cancer fundraiser then moved to the Calgary Stampede to catch the extraordinary chuck wagon races and gala show. We reluctantly made it back to the hotel after their closing firework display.
The next day our meetings started in the gorgeous setting of Banff, AB. Our first speaker discussed carbon taxes, the future of electricity trends over the next 20 years and provided insight into what strategies make sense in maintaining profitability and creating demand in the controls sector.

Our second speaker gave an overview of the current market conditions in Alberta along with data on US and global situations. He also discussed the climate leadership plan and reviewed ever changing issues with the administration south of the border.

We rounded out the day with information on CME’s quest to revitalize the manufacturing sector and strategy to leverage opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution. Some strategies include lowering investment risk through enhanced capital depreciation rates and/or tax credits, establishing manufacturing hubs and demonstration centres to showcase technologies, extending successful regional programs across the country and re-investing carbon-pricing revenues into offsetting the cost of purchasing new technologies.

Our business meeting focussed on the implementation of our CRN harmonization strategy, planning sessions for the 2018 CPCA Industry 4.0 Conference and an overview of our most recent market reports and forecasts.

Members also discussed the best ways expand relationships with academia. We currently provide annual scholarships to 3 colleges across the country to the best and brightest candidates in the instrumentation field. We plan to make the most of these relationships to promote careers with member companies and hope to establish annual CPCA career fairs with these schools, ensuring members get advance access to the top candidates.

The AGM always mixes in lots of networking opportunities with process leaders. Whether you prefer attending private dinners in breathtaking locations, heading out to challenging courses in our annual golf tournament sponsored by IPPT / Process West or ATVing through the mountains, there are countless ways to expand your business relationships in unparralled ways!
