As most of you are aware, it is a legal requirement in Canada, to have industrial instrumentation approved for electrical safety per the Canadian Electrical Coded (CEC), particularly if it is going into a hazardous area with the potential for combustible gasses. In Canada, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) approves certification bodies that can provide this approval.

Many years ago, before free trade, we had a near monopoly in Canada: CSA – Canadian Standards Association. This had the advantage of having a common mark out there that was easy to recognize, but there was no competition to encourage improved customer service; providing more options for the manufacturer.
